Five Friends Get Away From It All!
The five of us cannot recollect how the original idea for this trip started. But a few months back, there was a conversation on Facebook Messenger, that spiraled into a long thread about one of the gals turning the big 40, and wouldn't it be fun to go to NYC to celebrate.
The FAB five:
We all met at church after I returned to the Bay Area to work, after living in New York City post Graduate School. The year was around 1998 when the connections first began. We were all in the same home group fellowship at one point. This small group had a huge impact on my life and Christian walk. 10 of us went to serve in China on a missions trip during the SARS epidemic in 2003.
Vicky was my landlord at one point, and Rose and I were her first tenants when she bought her first home in El Cerrito. One memory I have of these two is when Rose was moving cross country to Chicago, 9/11 happened. Vicky and I were at home in the early morning, when Rose called and we heard the chilling message on our answering machine. "turn on the TV, the World Trade Center has been attacked."
I co-coordinated the weddings of Michelle and her husband Dave, and later, Kim and Michael, who married the same year as my husband and I. Michelle was matron of honor at my wedding. We have all gone through many changes, and have seen each other through good times and bad. We met when we were all out, or almost out of college, finding our way in the career world. And now, 4 of us are moms, two work full time, and we find it harder to stay in touch and hang out.
Anyway, here is our trip!!
Kim and I take off from SFO to JFK.. June 1, 2018
(Rose drove to LA to drop off her 3 girls at the grandparents and flew separately, and didn't get to the apartment until 3:30 am. Vicky flew out earlier, and checked into our rental. Michelle is taking a bus from CT the next day.) After taking a taxi to the apartment, I realize I've lost my credit card, and had to cancel it after trying to track the cab driver down. Went to sleep around 3 am local time.
We are SO relaxed!!
Our humble AirBnB for the next 4 nights, Upper East Side. 3 BR, 1.5 bath. Really the half bath was more like a quarter bath. It was so small, you could wash your face in the sink as you used the toilet.
Breakfast Saturday. Rose, Kim and I found this cute little French cafe a block away. It showed up in my Facebook feed. Le Moulin a Cafe.
hot chocolate! |
Next, we went to walk the High line.
It was hot and muggy. We needed popsicles, stat!
Then, on to Chelsea Market!
Li-Lac Chocolates... yum! Too hot to buy a box. Bought a truffle and caramel for NOW!
We also picked up some sushi for lunch. And I have no photos of it.
Next stop, World Trade Center, 9-11 Memorial
And next, the Staten Island Ferry!
Some of the gals had never done this. And it's FREE! Best freebie view in the City!
We walked uptown a bit, past Wall Street, to meet a friend of Vicky's for drinks at Little Park.
And Michelle finally arrived! The gang's all here!
Dinner at Cata
The tapas and cocktails were divine!
I never drank in NY when I lived here. I was a starving librarian. :-D

I ate so much, I literally cried, I was so full!
And that wraps up our first full day in NYC!
